How do I reserve a room in Shelby Hall?
  • Shelby Hall reservation requests should be sent to rjhogue@ua.edu.
  • Please include the date and time of your meeting/event, how many people you expect in attendance, as well as any other special requests or requirements.
  • Please note that food and drink are not permitted in any of the lecture halls.

How do I reserve the Shelby Hall Rotunda?
  • Requests to reserve the Shelby Hall Rotunda should be sent to rjhogue@ua.edu.
  • Please include the name of your event, the date and time (including set up/clean up time as needed), how many people you expect in attendance, and a brief description of the event.
  • Please note that tables, chairs, podiums, sound equipment, etc. are not included in rotunda reservations.
  • The Shelby Hall Rotunda is not available for lunch reservations during the week.

How do I reserve the Engineering Quad, the Shelby Courtyard or another outdoor space near Shelby Hall/the S.E.C.?
  • You can gain permission to use an outdoor space by filling out a Grounds Use Permit. UA Grounds will confirm with the Building Administrator that the space you have requested is available, and they will then approve your use.

I'm an instructor teaching in Shelby Hall. How do I obtain a key to my classroom?
  • During the first week of the semester, the clasroom door will be unlocked for your convenience. During that week, please stop by 1032 Shelby Hall between 7am-2:30pm to check out a key for the semester.
  • As an instructor, you are responsible for unlocking the room for your students each day. Please do not rely on Building Administration or the Chemistry Department Office to unlock your classroom, as they may not always be available to do so.

How do I pick up the key I requested?
  • If you can’t make it during the Building Administrator's office hours (7am-2:30pm), you should arrange in advance to pick up the keys. If you are having an event at Shelby Hall and do not pick up keys, your reservation will be considered cancelled.
  • If you stopped by during office hours and Rachel wasn’t available, please email her at rjhogue@ua.edu to make a pickup appointment.
  • Feel free to contact Rachel before you come over, and she will make every effort to insure she is at her desk when you arrive.

Do I have to pick up the key I requested myself? Can a student/colleague pick up my key for me?
  • Events: If you have requested keys for an event, you may designate a representative to collect them. Please notify Building Administration in advance of their arrival: rjhogue@ua.edu.
  • Instructors: If you teach a class in Shelby Hall, you may designate a representative to collect your classroom key. Please notify Building Administration in advance of their arrival: rjhogue@ua.edu.
  • Lab/Office Key Requests: If you’ve requested lab or office keys, you must pick up your keys in person. You will be asked to sign a digital receipt in the presence of the Building Administrator or a representative. This applies to everyone on campus with no exceptions.

How can I return my key(s)?
  • Keys can be returned to 1032 Shelby Hall any time, day or night. There is a locked drop-box outside the door with instructions for returning keys. Please place your keys inside an envelope (or fold them inside a piece of paper), and write your name on the outside.
  • If the key you are returning was checked out for an event and is on a numbered key tag, you do not need to put it in an envelope when returning it. Event keys must be returned within 24 hours.

I am locked out of my office or lab after business hours. What should I do?
  • Please contact UAPD at 205-348-5454 and ask them to call the locksmith for you.
  • Please note that there is a $75 unlocking charge.

I am locked out of the building because my Action Card isn’t working, and it is a weekend or a holiday. What should I do?
  • If you have not requested building access, please do so by completing a Key Control Form. Access will be granted by the end of the week in which it is requested.
  • If you have requested access, try a different door, as the card reader might be malfunctioning. Please email Buildng Administration with the date and time that this occured, so that we insure it doesn't happen again. Sometimes people lose building access unexpectedly, but it can be restored within 24 hours, once the Building Administration office has been notified.

I have an urgent maintenance request, and it is after hours or I can’t find the Building Administrator. What should I do?
  • If after hours please follow the Emergency Service Guide.
  • If it is during regular business hours, please contact your department.

Why do I get Bama Dinning when I try to call Building Administration or vice-versa?
  • Bama Dining is 348-6816; Shelby Hall Building Administration is 348-6818.

What time does Shelby Hall unlock and re-lock?
  • On weekdays, Shelby Hall's parking lot doors unlock at 7am and lock at 9pm. Rotunda, courtyard, and breezeway doors unlock between 7:15-7:30 and lock at 9pm.
  • On holidays and weekends, the building is swipe access only through the parking lot entrances for authorized personal.

What time does the Science & Engineering Complex unlock and re-lock?
  • On weekdays, the S.E.C.'s exterior doors unlock at 7am and lock 9pm. All exterior doors automatically open & close at these times.
  • On holidays and weekends, the building is swipe access only through the parking lot entrances for authorized personal.
